I am interested in attending the meeting for Habitat for Humanity club and possibly joining because I have been involved with the organization before and would like being involved with it again. I am also interested in joining the club Best Buddies. I heard about it at orientation and fell in love with the idea of working with people with intellectual disabilities. Another reason I am interested in Best Buddies is because I am majoring in Secondary Education and I might decide to take the Special Education pathway and become a high school Special-Ed teacher. A few other events that are somewhat interesting but I’m not sure I would go to include: the trip to the Big-E and the multiple field hockey games.
I am interested in going to the Pride-Alliance meetings and I might also join them because I was a member of the Gay-Straight Alliance in my high school and I enjoy the diversity. I am also interested in the anime club, although I did not see them on the list of events and meetings. I am also interested in attending The Sissy Boy Experiment because I think the story sounds very interesting and sad, and I would like to learn about it.
A club I would like to join is the Fencing club. I’ve always wanted to engage into some kind of combat sport or something that simulates fighting. From what I’ve seen, Fencing looks like great fun. The practices would provide a good workout for my legs and I could learn some useful defensive techniques too in case I ever need to defend myself when in danger of physical harm from someone. It’s something new and exciting that I definitely want to try out.
At the billiards club meeting, I learned the basics of how to hold a pool stick and how to hit the cue ball with the best possible force. I learned that the dominant arm(my right arm) is used to hold the stick while the secondary hand(my left hand) is used to form a bridge with the fingers near the tip of the pool stick. I would then hit the cue ball in the center with the stick slightly elevated above the table with as much force as possible. I also learned that when the cue ball is stuck on the side edge of the table, it’s best to use the secondary arm to hold the stick with the dominant one forming a bridge with the fingers.
I would like to join the Eastern Outdoors Club but it meets every week when I have class so hopefully I can attend some events just through getting emails. I was in Outdoors Club at my high school and I would like to be part of it again because I really enjoy doing activities involving nature. It will benefit me because being involved in at least one club I think will help me to meet new people and I will be doing something that I enjoy. I was also interested in joining Habitat for Humanity because at the club fair I signed up for emails and it seems like something else I would enjoy doing. Also if I don’t have time for the Outdoors Club meetings I will be able to make the Habitat for Humanity meetings. It is also something I think I would enjoy which is why I would like to join. I think it will benefit me to have at least one club to go to each week.

Best Buddies
Today, I attended a meeting for the school-run organization called Best Buddies. This organization is a group of dedicated individuals who work with people who have intellectual disabilities. Not only is Best Buddies an organization at Eastern, but it is in all fifty of the United States and in fifty countries.
At the meeting, the president of the organization, Ashley, explained a little about the group. She mentioned some of the events that they participate in each year, including: the Special Olympics, a Bowl-a-Thon, and other various activities. This year, she talked about how the group is interested in taking a trip to Mystic Aquarium and possibly hosting a prom for all of the members of Best Buddies and their buddies.
She went on to explain that there are two options as far as what kind of member you could be. One of the options is called one-to-one. A one-to-one member has the responsibility of a regular member, but on top of that responsibility, they are assigned an individual to call once a week and hang out with at least once a month. Ashley’s one-to-one buddy explained that last year her and Ashley went bowling together and went out to lunch as some of their monthly activities. The other kind of member, which is less involved, is not paired up with an individual but still attends all the meetings and group events. This way, they are still interacting with the buddies, but not on such a personal level.
Overall, I am really thrilled and excited to be a member of Best Buddies. I wish I could take on the responsibility of being one-to-one but I think that I just want to be an associate member because I have never worked with people who have disabilities before. In joining Best Buddies, I hope to become a better person and maybe even gain an interest in becoming a special education teacher.
I am interested in a few clubs. The two that really interest me the most are the FEMALES and the Peace and Human Rights Club. The event that I will most likely attend and am interested in is “Women Speak: Talking Policy and Inciting Change.” This seems cool just because it’s about women and most likely equality. I like events and speeches that empower women which is the same reason why I’m interested in FEMALES and the Peace and Human Rights Club. Many of the events on the website unfortunately are during my class times so it is hard to attend most. I have classes basically from 8-3 then work at 4 til 9:30. But I will try to attend some of them so that I can meet new people from the school and make new friends. 🙂 It would also be nice to find some people to form a homework club with! Awwyeah. I think it may be especially important for me to get involved because I’m a commuter and aren’t on campus as much as most people.
for the activity:
I’m not sure what a green event is.. but I attended some of the pool tournament. Not sure what to do for proof, I could have people from Crandall tell you if they saw me or not (I was there for hours.) I also played pool for like 2 hours in the pool hall in the student center with a bunch of other kids which isn’t a formal event but it has to count for something.
For a club that i am intrested in is pool club. I am not very good at pool but i like the game. I have spent the last few days practicing at the pool tables in the student center. I hope to get better at it and i will keep practicing inbetween classes. I am looking to check out some other clubs to see whether i am intrested in something new. I am not going to join any club until i can get a car because i commute. I am hoping i can get one soon so i can look into the pool club more but i am not going to do that until i get more practice.
I would like to join the Females Excelling, Maturing to Achieve, Leadership, Excellence and Success club (FEMALES) because the purpose of the club really interests me. The mission of FEMALES is to promote unity, leadership and sisterhood among the women of ECSU. The members also said that they have a “sister” program where Eastern students mentor younger kids who need someone to talk to or look up to. I’ve done a lot of student government clubs and mentoring in high school and I think that this club would really suit my interests.
Last Friday I participated in the “Late Night” activities at the student center. I attended with my roommates and we had a really fun time. At first when we arrived we went to go see the band Like Trains and Taxis in the cafe. We all agreed that the band was pretty good and we enjoyed it. After that we went to see some of the other activities that were set up such as the giant foosball table and the “human gyro”. We ate some chips and soda and soon after we left feeling like we had a good night.
I would like to find out more about Ultimate Frisbee club. I believe it runs in the spring. I unfortunately may not be running Outdoor Track this year because I will miss most of my only three bowling tournaments of the year that happen to be in the spring, and seeing as this is most likely my last year bowling in the youth program before I go professional, I would like to make the most of that time. This club would help me at eastern because I would be able to keep active. It would allow me to take a break from study, clear my mind, get some fresh air. Also it would help me make new friends. Also, I would like to learn more about the WECS radio club. I plan on going into a career possibly at one of the local radio stations. I believe this would give me a great credential on a resume and it would give me much needed experience with how radio works.
Tonight, I attended the Billiards Club meeting in the Student Center Cafe at seven o’clock. Brandon introduced all of the members of the e-board and explained what they do. They talked about designing a tee shirt for the club that could be designed by any student from Eastern, particularly a graphic design or art major. They also mentioned that in order to become an active member of the Billiards Club, you need to attend two consecutive Billiards Club meetings and all the meetings after that. You also need to join the ECSU Billiards group on Facebook. A group trip to Mohegan Sun was also discussed. The overnight stay would be all paid for. Lastly, they talked about a tournament. The cost would be $5 per person, and you would have the chance to win a $50 gift card to Walmart.
I attended the Billiards Club meeting on Wednesday at 7 in the Student Center Cafe. I got to meet many of the members and see them play some pool. They talked about becoming a member and attended the meetings. I talked to Brandon and some club members about starting my own club. I want to start a MMA club in this school because I think it would be very interesting and fun. I got a lot of positive feedback about the idea from many of the Billiards Club members.
I attended the University Hour, The Sissy Boy Experiment. The woman that was speaking was talking about how her brother was forced to participate in an experiment when he was very young to try to make him more masculine. The experiment involved regular beatings at home and being ignored and neglected when he behaved in a way that they saw as being too feminine. The experiment was deemed a success, but nobody knew at the time that it had permanently scarred him, and when he was an adult he committed suicide. We watched videos from CNN that told us her brothers story and about the man that was in charge of it. While the entire thing was very depressing, I’m glad that I went because I feel like people should know his story, and I feel like I have grown since learning it.
Last wednesday night I attended a Billiards Club meeting in the Student Center cafe with a few other FYR students and Brandon. During the meeting I learned about what the Billiards Club is about and also an upcoming event to Mohegan Sun which sounded interesting. They also talked about designing t-shirts for the club and about spreading the word to more artistic students. To become an active member in the club it was stated that you would have to attend two consecutive meetings and also join the group on facebook. I stayed for a bit after the information was given to watch some of the people in billiards club play some pool and I really liked how laid back and friendly the club was.
Last wednesday I attend the Billiards Club meeting. It took place in the Student Center Cafe at 7pm. There was a lot of people there include many from the FYR class. At the beginning of the meeting Brandon started by describing how the club worked that that you need to attend two meetings in a row and everyone from then on to be an active member. They also discussed the tournament at the end of the year, how much money they had to work with, and ideas for tshirts. Along with that they talked about the over night trip to Mohegan Sun that sounded pretty cool. After they discussed all of the issues everyone started to play pool; they had one table of eight-ball and one table of nine-ball. It was really relaxed and interesting.
I was not able to attend a university hour or billiards meeting last week so last saturday I attended Family Day with my family in the student center. We got to participate in a lot of fun activities and my family got to see the whole campus. During lunch i had the opportunity to sit with my roommate and her family and a few other students and their families. It was nice to show my family my school and spend the day with them, but it was also nice to meet my friends families and hear about where they came from and how they grew up. I think the activities ECSU had going on for families were really great and my family had a blast. It is definitely something my family and I will go to all of my years here at ECSU.
I attended Family Day on saturday with both my parents. They came up around 12:30 and we walked around camous for a little while. We then went to the Betty Tipton Room and had lunch. After that we met up with my cousin and did some more activites in the student center. My parents also bought some clothes at the bookstore. We then went up to my dorm, because my parents wanted to see it. After that i went back home to Rocky Hill with them
I attended the University hour on Wednesday the 21st on the alternative to the death penalty in New York. There weren’t too many people at that university hour. I thought there might be more later but there wasn’t. The entire University hour was talking about alternatives to the death penalty or something related to that. Over all the University hour was very bland and was just basically a speech. I think that this university hour was more directed at a specific class though.
Yesterday, I attended the men’s soccer game at Never’s Field against Salem State University. In the first period, three goals were scored. Mitch Power, Luke Capezzone, and Matt Furman scored these goals. In the second period, two goals were scored by Mitch Power. Salem State, though attempting many shots, did not score any goals. The final score was 5-0.
The other interesting thing about the soccer game was that free tee shirts and foam fingers were handed out at the beginning, however, by the time I got there they were all gone. Below are the links of two pictures I took at the soccer game, both in the first period.
Today i attended the Universty Hour for White Privilege 101 in the Student Center Theatre. It was pretty interesting and it was lead by an activists who explained white privilege. He talked mainly about race, and how white people are discriminating towards blacks. He talked alot about slavery and early America. One thing i didn’t like was how he called out faults in Abraham Lincoln. He said that Lincoln wasn’t all about freeing slaves, and actually wanted whites to be a superior race. Which goes against everything we learned about “every man is created equal” which Lincoln is famous for. But he made any good points about white racism and it was good to learn about. I have pictures to prove i was there
On Saturday, October 1, I attended the Ludacris concert which was put on by Campus Activity Board (CAB). The doors opened at 6 p.m. and the concert began a little after 7 p.m. A rapper named On Cue opened for Ludacris and he played for about an hour. Ludacris came out around 8:15. He played his most popular songs and even played a few songs by other artists. Overall, I thought the concert was very entertaining. The gym was set up well and Ludacris didn’t disappoint. Below are the links to a few pictures I took at the concert.

On 9/21, I attended a billiards club meeting. The meeting itself began at 7pm in the Student Center. Upon arriving, we listened to Brandon talk about the requirements for joining the club, which was the need to attend two meetings in a row in order to become an active member. He also talked about decorating T-shirts and a trip to Mohegan Sun which sounded pretty awesome. Although I do not think I will join the club, it was a pretty relaxing thing to do on a wednesday night.
Last night, I attended the Arts and Lecture Series in the gym at 7 p.m. Salman Rushdie, a well known author who won the Booker Prize in 1981 for his book “Midnight’s Children,” was the speaker. He spoke about a lot of different topics, but he focused on how he sees truth in two ways; there is a public truth and a private truth. In other words, there is what we know happened, and then there is what we say happened. For example, when east and west Pakistan were fighting in the seventies, there was a mass genocide of the educated people in east Pakistan. The Pakistani government denied this, which ended up putting Rushdie in the position he was in (he was to be assassinated by order of Ayatollah Khomeini). Overall, I thought the event was very interesting. I did not expect that I would be as interested in it as I was. I also did not expect that the event was going to be as busy as it was. There were many more people there than I thought there would be.
Today I attended University Hour in the Science building from three to four o’clock. John Mandelman, a research scientist at the New England Aquarium, spoke about human threats and stress on sharks, rays, and skates. One of the aspects he focused on was different ways humans use sharks, rays, and skates. For example, sharks are caught in order to make shark fin soup, to make leather products from their skin, and to make cosmetic products from different parts of their liver. The other main aspect he focused on was that even when sharks, rays, and skates are caught accidentally, they become stressed from being captured and handled, from the air exposure, or even from trying to escape the net. He went on to explain that this is such a huge problem because sharks produce very few offspring and live to be very old so the numbers of sharks are plummeting quickly.
Today I attended the University hour in the science building room 104. The presentation was by John Mandelman about the stress that is put on sharks. He talked about how he had originally planned on being a psychologist but changed plans when he became interested in marine life. The lecture was all about how sharks are not dangerous to us but we are more dangerous to them. He was very passionate about his topic and about how marine life is being so mistreated by people that it is starting to take a toll on the wildlife. He also talked about how marine life is being killed by millions by people. I thought his presentation was interesting.
Last week, I attended the arts and lecture event. Salmon Rushdie, the novelist, was the speaker. I expected it to be quite boring, but I’m happy to say that I found it interesting. One thing that he said that stood out as interesting to me was that if Charlie Brown had been allowed to kick the football even once, then he would lose part of his character that made him who he was. He mentioned that people gain insight from literature that they would not have had without reading it. I found this interesting because I had never really thought about it that way before. Also, he said that the things that some people really like about your writing are going to be the things that other people hate about it. Overall, I enjoyed listening to him speak, and I am glad that I went.
On Saturday the 1st I went to the sports center to see the Ludacris concert with my girlfriend. I think that Eastern providing these concerts is so awesome because we’ve always wanted to go see people in concert, but seeing someone like taylor swift or lil wayne can get insanely expensive even for horrible seats. But seeing Ludacris brought back many cool memories of growing up listening to Parental Advisory albums when you weren’t supposed to. My favorites of the night were the classics Blue Berry Yum Yum, and Whats your Fantasy. The concert was fun, but i thought that the introduction of OnCue was a little too long compared to how long Luda played for. I’ll email you the pictures, I’m not sure how to post them on here.
This past weekend, I attended the CAB-sponsored event Indoor Rock Climbing at Rock Spot Climbing in Lincoln, RI. It was an enjoyable experience for me. Once we arrived at Rock Spot Climbing, we were split into groups set at different stations. We climbed rock walls and played crazy games. Climbing rock walls was fun, exhilarating, and challenging. I managed to climb to the top of one of the rock walls. Then, we played games that tested our acrobatic skills as well as mental skills. We had to work as a team and use our creative thinking skills to devise a plan to get across “the ocean” safely to “the island” and avoid “the sharks”.
On this trip, I met a new friend. He is a friendly person and we plan on spending time with each other in the near future. What I got out of this experience is that I learned how to rock climb, conditioning my hands, arms, and legs to do physical work. It allowed me to face my fear of heights and overcome great challenges. Although the trip was brief, I got a lot out of the experience.
I attented the University Hour: Razing a Privileged Conscious. At this event a man gave a presentation on white privilege. He discussed rascism and how it is still seen in todays society. My favorite line he said was if you are playing monopoly and are cheating the whole time then finally you admit and and say I wont cheat anymore, lets keep playing. There is no way the other player can catch up because they are so far behind. Just because we changed the salvery laws doesnt mean we are equal suddenly, we didnt start over. He made a lot of good points of history and how things may decive us. He also mentioned how we just ignore racism, and how we need to address it to solve it. It was very interesting and eye opening
I attended a CAB event yesterday. It was the outdoor movie showing of Bad Teacher. It was pretty cool because it was like a drive in movie. They had a huge projector screen playing the movie and speakers all around. We all sat in the lawn in front of the screen. There were also tents that had drinks and popcorn, and there was a decent amount of people there. The movie was actually pretty funny too.
I attented the girls volleyball game. It was pretty intersting because I have experienced volleyball besides in gym class. They won which was exciting, they are actually really good. They were giving out foam fingers, shirts, and food like chicken wings.
This past Wednesday I attended the University Hour on Wildlife and Poster Stamps. Posters were displayed of the numerous art directions utilized by wildlife artists. We got shown many types of wildlife including insects, spiders, plants, and mammals. The speaker showed us how to depict animals and plants using artistic displays in forms such as posters and stamps. He told us about what the career field was like and how his job was. It was mildly interesting to witness how wildlife artists work and what their work is like. Food and refreshments were served in the back of the room which I also enjoyed.
This past wednesday I attended the University hour on Wildlife and Poster Stamps. The speaker talked about the process of designing a stamp and all of the people involved. It really amazed me how many different committees the tenative artwork had to pass through and how much time evolved before the stamp was actually approved and printed. The speaker also talked about different ways to draw an insect. I thought it was really interesting how he could draw the same bug but appeal to different audiences, like colorful and less detailed for children versus magnified and more realistic for scientists. The spider drawings were really gross but the guy speaking was a really talented artist. I learned a lot about stamps and drawing and the cheese and crackers were really delicious.
I went to the 90’s night that CAB hosted a few weeks back and I got to make my own air brushed hat. They had legends of the hiden temple going on in the BTR and that was pretty fun to watch. They played nothing but Nsync and Backstreet Boys and at one point i think they played B*witched. It all around was a fun night and a bit nostalgic however I think that thier Date Night last friday was even more fun because they had a lot more stuff to do. I made a [fake] flower and took numerous photos in the photo booth plus they had little stations for games where you could win sunglasses and stuffed bears.
Last wednesday I went to the Wildlife Posters and Postage Stamps University Hour. The man the was presenting was an artist of many sorts and explained to us the steps of designing a stamp. It seemed like a long and difficult process the required a lot of people to be involved in the project. The man was a very intricate and talented artist.
Yesterday I went to the men’s basketball game against Trinity. It was a good game to see. There were a lot of younger players in the game. They wound up winning which was cool. There was a great crowd. They made the game interesting, dominating the second half. I realized they were not passing to many open players in key situations, and they had too many traveling fouls. Also they shot the ball very much and did not go in for many lay-ups. Besides that they played very well, obviously, enough for a win. E-A..S-T..E..R-N Go Eastern!
For my CAB went, I attended “date night” on 11/11/11. I did not go with a date, or play the dating game, but I did go with some friends and we had a lot of fun. We got to take free pictures in the picture booth, play fun games, and ate lots of food. It was a really quiet weekend on campus so it was nice to get out of our dorm and socialize a little bit. My favorite part was most definitely the chocolate fountain.
Dear Brandon, I did my sports event post on November 1st. Scroll up so i shouldn’t lose credit
